A practice that changed its name, not its people

The office in Heritage Square opened in 1981 as Ewart Dental and looked after the same south Calgary households for decades. Retiring, Dr. David Ewart handed it to Dr. Jen Silver, who had spent eight years there as a hygienist before going back to school to qualify as a dentist. The sign now reads Macleod Trail Dental; the team and the charts stayed put.

Services

Exams, hygiene, children’s and seniors’ dentistry, fillings, crowns, bridges, bonding, root canal treatment, wisdom tooth removal and oral pathology checks make up the everyday work. Cosmetic care runs to veneers, whitening, smile design and Invisalign aligners. Mouthguards and grinding guards are made here, and a patient in pain is fitted in as an emergency. Several treatment rooms mean two of one family can often be seen in a single visit.

Airway, jaw and anxious patients

Dr. Silver’s added interest is airway work. For mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea it makes a custom mandibular advancement appliance, shaped like a night guard, that holds the lower jaw forward instead of a CPAP machine, coordinates with the patient’s physician or sleep specialist, and helps arrange a sleep study. Jaw pain, clicking and clenching are met with night guards, bite adjustment and muscle work before any thought of surgery is raised. Nitrous oxide and oral sedation are available, intravenous sedation for extractions.

Dentists

Dr. Jen Silver, the owner, took her Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Melbourne and belongs to the Alberta and Canadian Dental Associations. Dr. Endeep Gill grew up in Calgary, graduated from the University of Alberta and has done volunteer dentistry in Guatemala. Dr. Jennifer Yu, also Alberta-trained, follows aligner therapy, sleep apnea and restorative work.
