The Shri Swaminarayan Mandir (BAPS) is an important Hindu temple and cultural centre in Calgary that has become a vital focal point for the local community. It successfully merges spiritual function with cultural activity, hosting prayers, religious rites, educational programs, and community events. This article on icalgary offers a deeper look into this special place.

Understanding Hindu Temples (Mandirs)

A Mandir is a sacred Hindu place of worship. These are spiritual spaces visited by devotees to connect with the divine, pursue spiritual growth, and calm their minds. The central feature of every Mandir is the shrine, which houses murti (sacred statues or images of deities and saints). Devotees visit these shrines to pray before the murti, participate in rituals, and seek blessings.

The Swaminarayan Mandirs (BAPS) foster both personal and collective worship through various ceremonies and festivals. Beyond spiritual practices, Mandirs often offer classes in arts, languages, music, and philosophy. It’s also common for Mandirs to organize community walks, blood donation drives, and other social and charitable initiatives.

BAPS Mandirs welcome people of all faiths and backgrounds, offering a serene space for contemplation, learning, and cultural exchange. A visit to the Hindu temple can be a rewarding experience, helping you gain a deeper understanding of Hindu spirituality and culture in a peaceful and welcoming environment.

The Founding History of the Calgary Mandir

The Hindu saint Pramukh Swami Maharaj planted the seeds of the satsang (spiritual fellowship) in Western Canada during his vicharan (spiritual tour) back in 1988. Since that time, the swamis (revered Hindu representatives) have frequently travelled through Alberta. This dedication ultimately led to the establishment of the first Mandir in Western Canada in 2013.

The Mandir was officially inaugurated in Calgary at 3688 – 48th Ave. NE with a lively and joyous celebration. The opening ceremony was led by Pujya Gnanypariyadas Swami. The event included a traditional Hindu practice, culminating with the placement of the divine murti of Bhagwan Swaminarayan and Aksharbrahman Gunatitanand Swami, Shri Radha-Krishna, Shri Sita-Ram-Hanumanji, Shri Shiv-Parvati-Ganeshji, and the Guru Parampara.

The event was attended by Members of Parliament Devinder Shory and Jim Stevenson, as well as various business leaders and community politicians. Children and youth actively participated in the ceremony, highlighting the intergenerational commitment to the temple.
